Samsung Galaxy S2 ICS no longer mounts in USB Storage mode

Problem

After upgrading to Android ICS 4.0.3 through Samsung Kies, the handset only connects to the PC as a MTP (Music Transfer Protocol) or PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) device.

I can't navigate the directory structure on the phone, and I'm  presented with folders with names such as 00000000x1, 000000001, etc. There are no files contained within most of these folders.

Reproducable

100%.

Connect the phone using USB, and MTP or PTP modes will always connect by default. This now appears to be standard behavior in the stock Samsung ROM.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Connect the handset using a USB cable to any PC (Windows, Mac, Linux)
  2. Phone mounts in MTP or PTP modes.
  3. Swipe the notification blind down and tap the USB connection type.
  4. The MTP and PTP option screen displays, but there is no way to select USB Storage mode.

Solution

Change the connection type to USB Storage before you connect the phone to the computer.

  1. Go to the applications menu, and tap Settings to display the Settings groups.
  2. In the Wireless and network group, tap More...
  3. Tap USB utilities.
  4. In the USB mass storage screen, tap Connect storage to PC.
    • If you have USB debugging enabled, turn it off by tapping OK on the dialog that opens.
  5. When prompted, connect the USB cable to the phone.
  6. The status USB storage in use is displayed.
  7. Open a file browser, and observe that the handset is mounted with the label 12GB filesystem (for the fixed device storage), and xxGB filesystem (in the case of a 4GB removable SDHC card)
  8. Make the changes you need to using the file browser on your PC.
  9. When you disconnect the device, ensure you activate USB Debugging again if it was disabled when connecting in USB storage mode.
