GetJar and Sprint: a new Mobile Team is born

A 60,000-application store now available from any Sprint mobile phone

Sprint, the third largest wireless telecommunications network in United States, with 48.1 million customers, behind Verizon Wireless and AT&T just announced a major deal with Mobile Application veteran GetJar.

GetJar is one of the largest independent mobile phone application store in the world – actually only the Apple Store is bigger than this. It has been founded in Lithuania in 2004, long before the iPhone popularized applications, and has now offices in San Mateo, California and London. GetJar provides around 60,000 Mobile Applications across handset platforms including Java ME, BlackBerry, Symbian, Windows Mobile and Android, reaching more than 15 million customers in 200 countries. Indeed it offers free apps (it will cost you nothing outside of your operators data charges) for every mobile platform that can run applications - except iPhone, the Apple Store being its direct and only serious competitor. GetJar allows software developers to upload their applications for free through a developer portal. About 300,000 software developers have used this service resulting in nearly 750 million downloads.

Sprint has made public that everyone who owns a feature phone from Sprint will have access to the whole GetJar catalog, WinMo and BlackBerry included. A direct link to the GetJar catalog is at the moment included on the Sprint portal for these phones. Subscribers just can find the link in the download category. And of course you can download all the apps you want for free. The quality applications you can find include Facebook Mobile, mobile browser Opera Mini, location-based social network Loopt, mobile barcode shopping app ShopSavvy, and many others. The advantage for the users is that they can have access to these handy applications in one place and even standard mobile owners can reach all the same services that smartphones owners have.

After a deal with the first mobile operator Virgin Mobile France last year and mobile developer Sony Ericsson, GetJar is confirming its solid position in the Mobile Application world.
