MeeGo is launched; Maemo and Moblin are on their way out…

Intel’s Developer Network and Nokia just launched MeeGo, a new multi-platform, multi-system, multi-device, multi-use, and multi-everything service! It was a big launch and we wanted to know a little bit more about MeeGo.

We learn that it’s really the end of Maemo and Moblin which are respectively a powerful application for the Nokia N900 “mobile computer” and Moblin - short for “mobile Linux”-, is an open source operating system and application stack for Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), netbooks, nettops and embedded devices.

Both of them are going to disappear as MeeGo fully rolls out. In reality they are going to evolve into it, as it blends the best parts of the two systems. MeeGo is an open platform, which can effectively work on absolutely any device. So it will work on phones, netbooks, digital television, and cars…!

The Moblin 2.1 is the version out there today and the next version (the 2.2) will be MeeGo. That doesn’t mean that partners currently launching applications and services for Moblin will have to stop working, only that they will have a new version called MeeGo. The same kind of thing will occur for Maemo.

Intel has been working on apps with the open source community for a long time. The Intel Developer Forum has been helping developers create apps for a planned app store - the AppUp Centre which Intel launched last month. The AppUp Centre focuses on netbooks, and on apps that reach directly to netbook users. Developers responded well, and they recognise that they can reach a huge audience through it. 40 million netbooks are currently capable of running AppUp applications, which is a remarkable install base, and this number could reach 160 million by the next 3 years. AppUp is actually offering a big opportunity to developers to innovate in the netbook market.

Finally one of the biggest benefits of MeeGo is that it is absolutely non-hardware specific. As we said before it’s an open platform, hosted by the Linux Foundation and will support multiple software and hardware platform, not just Intel or Nokia: and it’s a good news for the consumers!
